inspired from a conversation in #buddhism in Undernet:

analyzing the categorical cosmology, it appears that
animal/ghost/hell-being/god/human are the sentients
whose liberation are the focus of attention of 
bodhisattvas. within this model (conventional) it 
seems vegetables (trees, cacti, perhaps sponges) are 
right out, not rebirthing or identified through time.

the literal meaning would seem to be initiating the 
various beings through rebirths until human and then 
out, kind of like hosts through the Karma-Wheel Ride:

	Hello, my name is Bobo, and I'll be your Host 
	for this sequence of rebirths. Should you have 
	any problems, desire a mid-flight refreshment, 
	or otherwise require attention to the Dharma 
	during your stay with us on the Wheel, please 
	feel free to contact me and inquire about our 
	complimentary waking mechanisms (Upaya Brand!).

	As always, there is a secure door marked
	'Death' at your lower right (followed by a 
	few uncomfortable rebirths before returning 
	to human form). When you're all done, please
	stop in and see the Captain (Gotama) for a 
	post-flight briefing.
