[about demonology] |Is it real? As much as anything is real. |Is it Mythos? I'm not sure what you mean by this. The study and call for demons is a science and art just like all magick is. |How do I get started? There are enochian systems available described by Dr. John Dee and others. You can read some fiction like the Mythadventure series by Asprin or the Master of Five Magics, and these have some ideas about demon summoning. I suggest that it might be easier to first call upon less powerful entities and work your way up to lesser demons. Research or make up what you can about elementals. Summon them within their plane. Example, venture into the ocean and summon a water elemental (undine?). Play with them for a while. Summon an air elemental in a wide open and windy space. Ditto. Then you can move to more potent energies, like random spirits or historical beings (be sure to ask their permission first or beg your pardon for the intrusion unless you don't care how nasty they are for disturbing their eternal rest). After that begin researching the various demon names, what they are like, and how they act during ritual. Summon very minor ones at first and only within a protected space (unless you want to be a 'dare-devil' ;>). Work your way up accordingly. As for summoning techniques as I've not ever resorted to much ceremony I haven't much to offer you besides what I've heard or seen. For the the elementals hold in hand or mouth some of the element of the plane you're dealing with. Then send forth your consciousness with a message of invitation. Elementals are pretty friendly but can be hard of hearing. For the random or departed spirits find a place where people were buried or burnt, or one which used to be used by a number of people yet which is now deserted (they aren't called 'ghost towns' for nothing). Gather your protection devices (if you want/need any) and perhaps light a candle near where you are seated, preferrably on the floor/ground. Send forth your consciousness into the ethers and locate one of the deceased/unborn. Draw them to you with the lure of an astral light, perhaps in the shape of a lantern. When they have returned to your physical form begin to speak with them (see 'A Christmas Carol' for good ideas on what to expect in the most extreme cases). For lesser and minor demons you may wish to go to the trouble, if you had not already done so, to construct a temple, complete with a secure area of summoning and a location into which the demon shall be cast (I think the traditional cage was a triangle). Sometimes people use blood to evoke the correct nature of the working. I suppose you can get cow's blood from a butcher, or, if you are familiar with Santerian or other neoAfrican traditions, then you might try purchasing a dove or chicken and doing an animal sacrifice. This can be quite powerful and so you might want some assistance by trained experts. If alone, give yourself permission to pull back at any time. Delve deeply into yourself and the earth simultaneously. This is the place of demon-spawn. Cast the demon into the triangle. Have it carefully prepared with power-names so that it will hold the thing and allow conversation. Then begin a conversation. Understand that in summoning any being you are disrupting its natural way of life and it may be irritated at your meddling. Demons are deceptive and crafty. Do not attempt to summon them unless you have some background in formal logic (mathematics would be good) and ethical theory (basic philosophy is fine). The greater demons are more difficult to find, move into the container, and constrain, and are likely to change appearances in a rather shocking manner. See some good horror films about demons and their tricks. They have some measure of influence over human perception and so the wary demonologist will also become immune to visual and other sensate assaults. Their offensive assault is mostly a matter of will-struggle and they can be faced down like any dog or wild beast. Demons are not omniscient or omnipotent, though some will surely attempt to appear this way and others may be quite powerful and knowledgeable. One may learn quite a lot about the world and about oneself when conversing with them. Again, take care that you don't believe too much, else the roles are likely to reverse and you'll find yourself under the power of the slave. Heed Faust well, and don't make any commitments for which you aren't prepared. They have a way of coming back to ensnare you. tyagi nagasiva tyagi@houseofkaos.abyss.com
