A beautifully illustrated style-classification and parts-list on Western architecture, surface ornament, and related craftwork. Like his
contemporary A. H. Christie (and all art historians prior to Jay Hambidge), Fenn follows Vitruvius' rules of
proportion, treats every geometric pattern as the product of static symmetry, and views now-obvious examples of dynamically symmetrical construction
as freehand aesthetic design. Still, this is a lovely introduction to architecture, and it is made doubly
useful by extensive exegesis on decorative applications of mythic symbolism and religious iconography for the working architect. CY
