BLACK AND WHITE SKIN SOAP
and
BLACK AND WHITE OINTMENT

It is wonderful and amazing to me that in the midst of today's changing aesthetics, these two old-time products are still made and packaged exactly as they have been since the 1930s. Sometimes it pays to not change!

BLACK AND WHITE SKIN SOAP

For those who desire a high-quality, traditional African-American beauty bar, we offer the old-time standard of excellence, Black & White Skin Soap. Made in Memphis, Tennessee, it still comes packaged in the same nifty art-deco-style box it was sold in back when Will Shade and the Memphis Jug Band played "Son Brimmer's Blues" down on Beale Street and Frank Stokes sang "Nehi Mamma" in Shiney Town. Is Black & White Skin Soap an occult curio with reputed magical effects? Yes, it is, if you consider time travel to be a magical activity.

BLACK AND WHITE OINTMENT

Here is an old-time favourite, still made and packaged in the old-fashioned way in a wonderful art-deco-style metal tin. Black & White Ointment is a skin care product (much like Vaseline or Bag Balm) that has long been popular in the African-American community. It is quite satisfactory as an emollient for the protection of the skin, but among root-workers it is more commonly utilized in the preparation of "condition ointment" or "solid perfume." For this purpose, a measure of Black & White Ointment is either blended with a condition oil (that is, a dressing or anointing oil) and applied to the skin, or it is used as the base in which to steep roots or herbs for a month, then heated and strained through cheesecloth to remove the residual vegetable matter, cooled, and allowed to harden again before being applied to the skin. Condition ointments such as this are particularly popular among two-headed doctors who give clients a "rub" or massage as part of a healing or jinx-breaking treatment, especially when crossed conditions have resulted from the victim being "poisoned through the feet."
