HOODOO, SANTERIA, CATHOLIC, and MAYAN

7-DAY and NOVENA-STYLE CANDLES

My friend Fred Burke and i have compiled a list of hoodoo, Santeria, Catholic, amd Mayan candles from our collections. These candles were all offered for sale during the 1990s at prices that ranged from 98 cents to $5.50 each. I want to thank my candle-scouting daughter Althaea Yronwode and my friend K. Rudin for helping me collect these wonderful items.

The candles are organized by manufacturer's name and then by style. Images are either four-colour printing on paper glued to the glass or silkscreen on glass. Some candles combine silkscreen and printed paper. The average height of these candles is 8" - 9"; one smaller candle is noted as such. Some candles have text in English, some in Spanish, and some in both English and Spanish. On those called "semi-bilingual," the Spanish translation is only fragmentary and may have been added at a later date.

Each candle is assumed to have two sides, distinguished from one another by a double slash (//). Names are as spelled and if two names appear on one side, they are separated by a single slash (/); if the images are unnamed, Fred and i have tried to identify the image [opinions given in brackets].

On Catholic and Santeria novena candles such as the Maximon one shown here it is most common for one side to bear an image and the other a prayer. Hoodoo 7-day candles usually display an all-over mixture of images and words without prayers, and they occasionally contain instructions for use.

For information on how these candles are used, see the page on candle magic.

For a list of the manufacturers' addresses, go to the page of candle makers.

For a list of retailers who sell these candles to the public, go to the page of suppliers.
