CANDLE SNUFFERS

The rituals and rites associated with magical candles in the hoodoo rootwork developed through contact with European culture. Among the old-time altar tools and artifacts of candle magic, one of the prettier and more useful is the candle snuffer. Once a staple object in every middle class household, where its use prevented the creation of the sooty billows of smoke that frequently arise when candles are blown out rather than snuffed, it lingers on in the conjure tradition as a link to the past and a part of almost every root worker's tool kit.

When a candle is burned in sections, either measured by time or by pins, it is invariably pinched or snuffed out, not blown out at the end of each session, to signify that the spell is not yet complete. A more graceful way to put out candles than by spitting on your fingers and pinching is to snuff the candles out with an old-fashioned candle snuffer. This also reduces objectional smoke from the snuffed candle. Decorative candle snuffers are often made of brass or brass and wood and they make elegant altar tools for spiritual workers whose practice involves regular candle burning. Small candle snuffers are also used by many hoodoo practitioners to form their loose Incense Powder into perfect cones for burning.

Two types of candle snuffers are shown here.

At the top of the page is a traditional 12 inch long-handled hinged brass candle snuffer with a lathe-turned dark wooden handle and bell-shaped snuffer. The pattern is American Colonial, but the snuffer itself is made in India.

The second pair of snuffers displays a bit more modern style. They are short-handled hinged brass candle snuffers with lathe-turned brass handles and bell-shaped snuffers. The ideal size for forming loose Incense Powder into perfect cones, they come in a variety of traditional and vaguely Art Deco patterns (our choice) and are also made in India.
