Both chalk and talcum-based sachet powders are used by African-American hoodoo practitioners to draw marks on the ground for a variety of purposes, including love drawing spells, protection spells, crossing spells, and hot foot spells. But whereas the sachet powders are selected on the basis of their composition -- for instance, Goofer Dust to jinx an enemy, Break Up Sachet Powder to cause a couple to quarrel and separate, or Follow Me Boy Sachet Powder to draw a lover to one's home -- chalk marks are more often employed on the basis of the designs drawn and are usually either created for crossing or harming or for protection. Those which are intended as crossing marks are almost invariably made in such a way that the enemy will step into or over them, making them an example of hoodoo foot track magic. Once drawn, they are activated by spitting into them. One typical enemy sign consists of a circle with an X drawn through it. (Scholarly readers will recognize this as a variation of the so-called Congo Quincunx pattern or "Five-Spot" -- and will also appreciate that this is a rentention of African customs concerning chaclk markings.) Another crossing mark drawn with chalk is the "Wavy Snake Lines" pattern, which evokes a parallel form of foot track magic in which buried snakes, snake skins, or snake sheds are placed in the enemy's pathway.
Although any sort of blackboard chalk may used to draw crossing marks to injure an enemy by poisoning through the feet, the use of Chinese Miraculous Insecticide Chalk carries with it a special viciousness, for the chalk itself is toxic to vermin, and the picture of the cockroach on the package says a lot about how the practitioner feels about his or her enemy. Just be careful when using it: wash your hands after touching it and do not put it down where children or pets might get into it.
If you find that someone has put down chalk marks in your path, the simplest
way to wipe them out is to brush them away with a broom. Alternatively, you can
kill the jinx by tracing over the chalk pattern with a mixture of Sulphur and
Salt. To do a really
thorough eradication job, some people find it advisable to prepare a liquid scrub with
Chinese Wash, or a handful of
bath crystals such as
Van Van or
Fear Not To Walk Over Evil
dissolved in water and to pour this over the whole mess.
