Barry and all,

Here is the data I have collated on 108 and its appearance around the world=
.
Barry, Dan, & Mike: see the bottom for one you may not have already known.

* in Buddhism, number of beads in a rosary
* number of books in Tibetan Kanjur
* in Hinduism, number of beautiful gopis who danced with Krishna
* 108 heptominoes (108 different ways to arrange seven squares)
* in Judaism, 1080 minims in the Jewish hour
* in Greece, Heraclitus gave 10 800 years as period b/w successive
destructions of civilizations
* sum of first three powers (1^1 x 2^2 x 3^3=3D108) hence, number of beads
used in rosaries
* 108 chakras in the human body
*  Vatican has 108 acres
* connected to preeminent Osiris number 72 (72+36=3D108)
* in India, 10 800 bricks in Agnicayana fire alter
*  Rig Veda has 10 800 verses of forty syllables each ( 10 800x40=3D432 000=
)
and shows 108 and four associated in another sacred context
* angle of two adjacent sides of a pentagon equal 108 degrees
* in Sumer, the female sexual vitality of Inanna, born of the moon, is
identified with 108 and benefiting humanity: drunken Enki gives Inanna 252
"me"("arts of civilization") which she gives to humanity along with an
untold number of Inanna's own "me"-- if there were 108, this would produce
the number 360 (252+108=3D360), the key to establishing the Sumerian vision=
 of
order in the universe
* in Buddhism, 108 rosary beads once again associates 108 with increase an=
d
benefit
* in India, 108 is connected to the seed numbers for the lengths of the
Indian cosmic ages, the Yugas (See Indian Calendar)

In Japan, the =B3Bonsho=B2 is the Buddhist temple bell. It is struck 108 t=

Ringing the bell 108 times at New Year=B9s fits in with ideas of re-creatin=

108 is big with the Chinese organised-crime triads, e.g. the money paid
by the lowest level members will be some multiple of 108 units of
currency.

>    * Vatican has 108 acres

I didn't know that one! Was the boundary of this area set before the
1929 Concordat with the Mussolini government (which established the
Vatican City State as a sovereign secular entity)? Also, what is the
history of the use of the acre as a unit of area in the Italian
peninsula?

>    * connected to preeminent Osiris number 72 (72+36=108)

Indeed. One way that 72 and 108 form a pair is that 72 = (2^3) * (3^2)
and 108 = (2^2) * (3^3), so one gets the splicing together of twoness
and threeness to form patterns, which I think is core to the
significance of both numbers and of the two numbers as a pair. If one
interprets exponentiation in terms of getting spatial dimensions, in
each of the above products you get a square and a cube.

One can play in various ways, e.g. 72 * 108 = 7776 = 6^5 = (3*2)^(3+2)
and the arithmetic mean of 72 and 108 = 90, the number of degrees in a
right angle.

> * angle of two adjacent sides of a pentagon equal 108 degrees

With the number 5 also bringing together twoness and threeness.

I think this was one of mine. I don't have any notes to say where I found
it, but it seems to be confirmed at several sites. This one looked fun, but
its a movie, and my machine can't handle the bandwidth:

http://www.jupiterent.com/Html/Program/Vat_Info.html

"The Vatican and Vatican City, located on 108 acres in the heart of Rome and
known to most as the home of the Pope, is one of mankind's holiest shrines.
But, few are also aware of the behind-the-scenes influence the Vatican has
had in guiding European destiny or in contributing to the collapse of Soviet
Communism. The Vatican Revealed offers a unique tour of the famous sights and
provacative interviews with scholars and journalists, shedding light on the
world's smallest, yet influential nation".

Several online sources give 108.7 acres/44 hectares, but that _could_ be the
result of the acreage being expressed in hectares (metric equivalent used in
Europe) rounded up, then converted back accurately to acres!

from http://www.ewtn.com/jp2/papal3/state.htm

"The territorial seat of the Roman Pontiff, established by concordat (the
Lateran Treaty) with Italy in 1927 (revised in 1985). It is the smallest
sovereign state in the world (108.7 acres).

>From this it seems that this patch of land was only established quite
recently, and the dimension is less than perfect. As Neil points out, did
the Italians/vatican even measure in what is surely an English dimension, the
acre? At the moment my money is on coincidence for this one.

Chris writes:

sum of first three powers (1^1 x 2^2 x 3^3=108) hence, number of beads used

Does this refer to RC rosaries? And why would there be a mathematical
element, ie why the 'hence'? What is the story of rosary beads and 108?

Mike

"The Vatican and Vatican City, located on 108 acres in the heart of Rome and known to most as the home of the Pope, is one of mankind's holiest shrines. But, few are also aware of the behind-the-scenes influence the Vatican has had in guiding European destiny or in contributing to the collapse of Soviet Communism. The Vatican Revealed offers a unique tour of the famous sights and provacative interviews with scholars and journalists, shedding light on the world's smallest, yet influential nation". <BR>
    <BR>
Several online sources give 108.7 acres/44 hectares,&nbsp; but that _could_ be the result of the acreage being expressed in hectares (metric equivalent used in Europe) rounded up, then converted back accurately to acres!<BR>

>From this it seems that this patch of land was only established quite recently, and the dimension is less than perfect.&nbsp; As Neil points out, did the Italians/vatican even measure in what is surely an English dimension, the acre?&nbsp; At the moment my money is on coincidence for this one.&nbsp; </FONT><FONT COLOR="#000000" style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" SIZE=3 FAMILY="SERIF" FACE="Times New Roman" LANG="0"><BR>

<BR>
Indeed. One way that 72 and 108 form a pair is that 72 = (2^3) * (3^2)<BR>
and 108 = (2^2) * (3^3), so one gets the splicing together of twoness<BR>
and threeness to form patterns, which I think is core to the<BR>
significance of both numbers and of the two numbers as a pair. If one<BR>
interprets exponentiation in terms of getting spatial dimensions, in<BR>
each of the above products you get a square and a cube.<BR>
<BR>
One can play in various ways, e.g. 72 * 108 = 7776 = 6^5 = (3*2)^(3+2)<BR>
and the arithmetic mean of 72 and 108 = 90, the number of degrees in a<BR>
right angle.<BR>
<BR>
&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; * angle of two adjacent sides of a pentagon equal 108 degrees <BR>
<BR>
With the number 5 also bringing together twoness and threeness.<BR>
