In Japan, the “Bonsho” is the Buddhist temple bell.  It is struck 108 times on New Year’s Eve to ring in the New Year and drive out the 108 evil desires that man is heir to (Joya-no-kane).
Ringing the bell 108 times at New Year’s fits in with ideas of re-creating and sustaining the re-creation of the world.  Such rituals have been documented for as far back as Sumer, circa 3500 B.C.  No doubt their beliefs extend backward even further as all mythologies draw from material perceived to emanate from a distant past.
