Islamic magic and Ethiopian magical practices (from East Africa
as far as I know. They may have moved it since I was there in the
1950's) also use unaltered natural objects. This kind of magic is
known as Natural Magic, see Draja Mickaharic's book -The Practice of
Magic.-
Paracelsus mentions this kind of magic as well. The idea of
'Charging' comes from Isaac Luria's popularization of the QBL, and
from later writers of that vein. It is valid, but Luria,
Paracelsus, and all of the early writers all state that the person
doing the charging must have the 'Spiritual power,' or as my
teacher called it the 'Moral authority,' to charge things. See the
reference to prayers over sigils in -The Aim of the Sages- the major
source book for European Magic, known in the Latin as the Pickatrix.
It is still available as a paper back, in Arabic.
