The inner core can be made from an old steel coat-hanger, and can be magnetised by making it the solenoid in an electro-magnet set-up, which you can easily construct yourself, from materials which should not cost more than £5 ($10 US) from your local electronics store, assuming you know a modicum of Electronics.
