Hail Satan! Hail Oblio! "Caty" : > How many people to do you need for this? depends on whether you want to do "safe" work or not. with all the warnings I am seeing about working alone, it does appear to be possible for a single individual to use the board to contact the spirit world. > Can 1 person sussessfully work? what does "successfully" mean? both the authors in my library on the subject of spirit boards generally and Ouija (oui - French 'yes'; ja -- German 'yes') in particular (Stoker Hunt, Michael St. Christopher) warn against using the board alone. Hunt says working with others helps one to avoid emotionally overwhelming or frightening experiences of distress. if you are confident and self-assured, Hunt doesn't really address your needs, he just says work with others. I should point out that most of his book is concerned with examining the variety of problems and virtues associated with the use of the board, and he may be superfluously cautious here. St. Christopher has more practical advice for the interested reader. he lists the following items which should be considered if one desires to work alone: * he says that recording the results in writing and using the planchette is very difficult; why one could not use a tape recorder I'm unsure * he also mentions the problem of addiction to the use of the board and seems to think that people who are weak-minded may become dependent upon the board (for advice to orient their lives, I suppose); of one is sufficiently disciplined, then this precaution needn't be necessary * he obliquely mentions that one's perspective may include providing the board with too much authority, apparently thinking that in numbers people are more likely to question the authority of the spirit world more carefully before, say following instructions given by random ghosts. I see no reason why the individual of sound and stable mind should avoid the solitary use of the spirit board or any other kind of divinatory or spiritualist device (spirit boards have a long and interesting history which precedes Parker Brothers' Ouija by centuries, at least according to Hunt). blessed beast! nocTifer ======== ~references: "How to Use a [sic] Ouija Board: Communication with the Spirit World", by Michael St. Christopher, Indio, 2000; pp. 14-5.
