I guess it's just not my "cup of tea". I've done water scrying. It gives much the same results as using a crystal ball. If you think you might be interested in crystal gazing, try water scrying first to see if you have an affinity for it -- it's a lot cheaper than buying a crystal! Use a bowl of plain glass or white china (plain white on the inside -- it can have decoration on the outside, since you won't be looking at that). Fill it with pure water and place it on the table in front of you, then sit quietly and look deeply into the water. If you have an affinity for scrying, you will eventually find yourself looking "through" the water and seeing figures or symbols. Keep the environment quiet and calm. Some prefer to put a cloth on the table (black, white, blue, or purple) and a lot of people like to have a candle burning nearby. Decorative crystal balls are easy to find, but for divinatory purposes the ball should be quite clear -- no facets, no bubbles -- and these are very hard to find! I have been looking for such a ball on and off for about 25 years, and only a few months ago my father found one and sent it to me as a birthday present. (I haven't used it yet.) Luckily, there's no need for the ball to be very large -- a few inches in diameter will do fine. I would think a polished stone like the one you describe would also work well, especially if the stone is plain in colour and is polished so much that you can look "into" it or "beneath the surface".
