Hilander -

The Tree as used in the magical qabala (with the, as noted, late
accretion of Tarot trumps to the Paths) is an older design, indicating
the "fall" from Eden by the loss of free passage in the higher
Sephiroth, and poor old Malkuth hanging by a thread over the qliphoth.

A symmetrical Tree was proposed by the profound qabalistic thinker,
Issac Luria, in the 15th-16th century. Note that the attribution of the
Letters to the Paths are also very different under that pattern. This
conception of the Tree is presented with exquisite commentary in Aryeh
Kaplan's edition of the Sepher Yetzirah (from Weiser).
