because one's relation to dualism is fundamentally altered (there ceases
to be an attractive selection toward any one pole of a dyad). also, one's
insight as a Master of the Temple enables one to avoid the pitfalls of
self-construction (entering into it only *temporarily* for the purpose
of communication, then withdrawing back into the Garment of the Divine).

if you mean the self, then it isn't destroyed, but how it appears is
forever changed (because its changing nature is revealed to the Master).

this is a lovely question, and one which I think deserves more 
attention by Hermetic mystics, whether or not they decide to use 
magic as part of the ascension process. 

crossing the Abyss can be very dangerous! She may smite you with Her
Rod, or imprison you in a Dungeon of self-delusion for the foreseeable
future. too often the mystic engages ascetic rigour and perceives
a withdrawal from abject temptation as an Abysmal Adventure Success,
simultaneously mistaking the Path (confusing levels of achievement)
and blowing up their self-concept into a Metatronic Nightmare. the
way to avoid this is through a firm course of humility and, for most,
guidance by one who has already attained. sustained observation of
the mage (whether in person or through a mechanism such as the Magical
Record) must become a practiced and consistent evaluation method
in order that such pitfalls as the confusion mentioned may be avoided.
