Franklin -
You'd be amazed at what you can do with a piece of good fabric (something that
has the background color and texture you like) and some inexpensive
fabric paints. Chalk is good for laying out the design, and can simply be
brushed away when you are done, and the acrylic paints out there today give you
total control over the color scheme of your design.
 
Just a thought from a fabric-impaired magician.
