<<Crowley was no addict. >>

Indeed he was, but it was unrelated to his magickal practices. He was
prescribed heroin to treat chronic asthma and repiratory ailments. That
was a common prescription in the early part of the 20th century, and many,
many people became addicted to heroin for that reason. Heroin, you may
remember, was originally touted as the best cough suppressant ever (it
probably is, but it's also almost as addictive as nicotine). Crowley spent
a lot of time trying to kick the habit later in his life, and his diaries
of those attempts are available. It seems he may have succeeded for short
periods of time, and may have managed to stabilize the habit, but did not
ultimately kick it.

He did not use heroin as part of magickal practice, as far as I've seen.
Cannabis, mescaline and nitrous oxide seemed to be his ritual substances
of choice.
