Might just be looking for "emergency magic". The kind you need on a dark street at night when a wierd guy is following you home.... [KM]: No spell *requires* candles, herbs, or whatnot. The magic is in your mind; the material components are just tools, like mnemonics, to get your mind in the right frame. Any spell has three components: conception, power-buildup, and execution. You a) think of what you want to do and how best to do it, b) build your power (this is where the props are most handy), concentrating on your goal, and c) "send" the spell out to do its thang. You can do all this without the tools; it's just harder, discipline-wise. If you are, in fact, after the "emergency magic" I talked about above, then the best way is to cut short steps a) and b); first, plan for emergencies by conceiving of and planning spells in your leisure and being ready when the situation arrives (kind of like fire drills); b) can be cut short by keeping a reserve of power ready within you, or knowing how to "ground and center" *fast*, or just making a direct appeal ("HELP!") to the diety of your choice.
