Wow, a straight forward practical question on alt.magick...

Here is a streamlined consecration rite. I should be effective for any
tool. I forget where I got the basic form, but I modified it to suit
my needs anyway. You should do the same. It is very flexible.

I use a formula of elemental consecration, associated with the four
directions. Any complete, fourfold system will work. You can easily
substitute the powers of the sphinx, etc.

Prepare yourself and surroundings by whatever means that you see fit.
If that means banishing, do it. If that means a purification bath, do
it. If that means eating a chilidog with extra cheese, do it.

Take the sword (or whatever) in your hands and sit with it, quietly
meditating on its significance and purpose. When you have bonded with
it sufficiently, stand up forcefully and say " I, [insert your name or
motto here] hereby take this lifeless piece of mater and give unto it
life. Creature of Art, be thou a Creature of Life." Pause for a
moment, and conceptualize the sword as a living creature. Visualize it
as alive, glowing and throbbing with life-force.

Walk to whatever corner you feel is appropriate to start with ( I use
the east) and lift the sword (or whatever) up, and say "I consecrate
and charge this sword [or whatever] by the powers of the forces of Air
[or whatever element you associate with the direction that you are
facing]. May it serve me well in the East, in this world and in all
worlds, and between the worlds, forever unto the ages."
Intone A-U-M or any other simple tone/letter set that sufficiently
symbolizes the creation and destruction of the universe.

Go to the next direction (for example, south). Raise up the tool and
say "I consecrate and charge this sword by the powers of the forces of
Fire. May it serve me well in the South, in this world and in all
worlds, and between the worlds, forever unto the ages.
Intone above mentioned symbol of creation and destruction of said
universe.
Continue for the remaining directions, following out this pattern.

When finished, come back to the center, and cradle the tool in your
arms, as a mother holding a newborn. Treat it as a living creature
from here on forward, forever.

Put it away, and eat another chilidog.

I hope that was helpful.
