In my experience, magic usually involves achieving certain states of consciousness, and doing things with them. But here is the thing - the rational, analytical state is separate to the "magical" state. When you are being Magical, your mind should be dominated solely by the magical operation you are meant to be performing - NOT thinking _about_ the operation. You can and indeed should apply the full power of your critical faculties, but afterwards, when you have returned to normal consciousness. Learn to control your mind through concentration, meditation, self-hypnosis, etc. - successful mind control is the basis of success in magic.
