Well, I never knew why they were |>there and how they were used until... well, today. |as I understand this matter, over the years that the dee/kelley workings |were taking place, several versions of the great table were received. |these differed slightly from each other. at no time did dee and kelley |use a great table that had double/triple letters. when mathers was doing |his reconstruction/expansion of the enochian system (300 years later) he |put all synthesized all versions, giving the double and triple letters. What is believed to be the final version of the great table is "the great table, as reformed by Raphael on the twentieth of April, 1587." In this table, there is only one letter per square. The text of this version of the table can be found in several places. There is a version of it in the "Enochian Studies" section of Denning and Phillips _Mysteria_Magica_, though IMHO the best version of it is found on page 118 of Geoffrey James' _Enochian_Evocation_, which is really a compilation of Dee's Enochian and Heptarchial material. It is fairly clear from even the text in Causabon's _True_and_Faithful_ Relation_ that many of the double letters shown in Mathers' version of the Enochian tablets are incorrect. There are several places in that volume where the spirits tell Dee and Kelly that a specific letter is incorrect and should be replaced with another, but both show up on the Golden Dawn tablets. --Scott
