It would allow too much mystification. correct. this is why irritability and grumpiness on the part of the mage interested in sharing hir work with others who are challenging and criticizing it may indicate a weakness or shallow comprehension -- an obscuring of the details. it may also indicate that the mage is better equipped to do the work than to step back and criticize it. in the case of mystics we're talking about folks who are braving an exposure of their deepest spiritual identity. it is to be expected that the circumstance may lead to difficult interactions, sometimes because of the difficulty of the subject itself, sometimes because of the position and theoretics to which the participants may wish (and/or fail) to constrain us. blessed beast! nagasiva ======== n a g a s i v a @ l u c k y m o j o . c o m Path: typhoon.sonic.net!not-for-mail Newsgroups: alt.magick.tyagi,alt.magick,alt.pagan.magick Subject: Re: Magic, Occultism, and Irritating Questions (was ...) I'd add the contextual delimiter of public discussion and criticism, but these aren't always present, I find. nagasiva : >>...why magicians sometimes react negatively when >>their work is questioned, criticized, or sometimes even changed or >>used differently than they'd intended. it is a complex problem that >>doesn't revolve around any single individual, and occultists and >>'magic academes' alike have to face this problem as would any >>sociologist who wishes to examine a particular social niche. hieronymous707@aol.com (Hieronymous707): > ...I don't see the "problem". Please explain. it's mostly a problem to those (esp. occultists) who use as their primary learning method the interview with practicing mages. if we refer to those who do only this (never practice, just come to intellectually understand it) as "occultists" as compared to practicing "mages", then the problem may be described as deriving from people mistaking mages for occultists, and becoming upset at the sometimes volatile response they may get in response to their rough treatment of what may be a very personal issue for the mage/mystic. compare art criticism and the reaction artists may have to it. blessed beast! nagasiva ======== n a g a s i v a @ l u c k y m o j o . c o m
