It's a grimore - I forget its actual dates (ie. of the oldest ms. we've
got of it) but of course it claims to be by Solomon (from the Lemegeton,
or Lesser Key of Solomon). It is the first of a series of smaller works
that compose the Lesser Key - the Goetia (dealing with evil spirits),
the Theurgia-Goetia (dealing with spirits partly good and partly evil),
the Ars Almadel (evocation of various angelic beings of a planetary
nature), and the Pauline Art (which I haven't read in a while and don't
recall the thrust of).

The Goetia is a ritual for evoking one of 72 "demons," each with various
offices, from the classics (finding treasure, bestowing favors in love,
business, law, etc., to some oddities like making trees bow down as the
magician passes). A seal or sigil is presented for each spirit, along
with a description of its powers and nature, followed by the
instructions for conjuring it to appear and obey.
