According to Nimoy in "I am Spock", the Vulcan salute was created by
himself based on a hand symbol from Orthodox Judaism. From his point of
view, the Vulcan culture is extremely hand-oriented and the nonverbal
counterpart to "Live long and prosper" (written by Theodore Sturgeon for
"Amok Time"), made a lot of sense. Nimoy also mentions that this
greeting was supposed to be a form of blessing.
