There is historical evidence by the early Hebrew writers, and the religious Jews of those times, that "the satan," (small s, meaning the opposer in Hebrew), was any angels sent by God, to test christians and jews. The early Jews, and later the christians, adopted the practice of labeling their spiritual rivals, as followers of Satan, (large S added later in history). The Gnostics were just one of many groups so labelled, by these early christians and jews. We see the same thing happening today, with conservative christians, labeling virtually any spiritual group, that does not fit their conception of the bible, as satanic, and cultic. Their only criteria for this name calling, are their own limited, biblically based belief systems.
