Hi, 

As far as i know -- and i may be wrong -- the notion that the rising of
Kundalini may be dangerous dates to and is directly downstream from the
writings of Gopi Krishna, who reported same. 

In my experience, dating from the 1960s to the present, i have never
received a "kundalini danger" warning from someone who did NOT
ultimately reference Gopi Krishna as the source of this warning. Those
who do not directly reference him sometimes propagate the religious
equivalent of an urban legend in that a disatrous kundalini raising
experience is said to have happened to a FOAF (friend of a friend) who
is not available for comment; then, on closer questioning, Gopi
Krishna's books are also referenced. 

I have also met people who believe that Gopi Krishna was suffering from
some form of mental illness which he interpreted as the awaking of
kundalini, although that is heresy to his devotees, of course.  

This is only my personal experience and is not to be taken as an
authoritative statement on the subject.
