Actually, Ali does have a special status, as he was the fourth Caliph
in the "first four Caliphs" you mention above.

So Ali is highly respected by both the Sunni and the Shi`ah.  He is also
the person through whom most Sufi tariqas trace their lineage, with 
the exception of the Naqshbandiyya, who trace their lineage through
Abu Bakr and Salman al-Farisi.
