Please see Peter Sanderson's post about the status of the Ten Commandments with resepect to the 613 Halakah: He wrote: > There are 613 positive and negative precepts, actually, called > miztvohs. Some of the mitzvoh are explicitly spelled out for the Jew > only but the righteous Gentile who follows the Noahide Laws may > observe many of them...the 7 (or 66) requirements are considered a > spiritual bare minimum to be considered righteous. In fact, not all > of the mitzvoh apply to all Jews either...some laws are spelled out > for specific groups of people that others are not required to > observe. He also made a point, which i too have observed, that many Christians who only know Jewish scripture through the King James Version of the Bible, think that the two sets of laws (10 vs. 613) are given equal primacy in Judaism. However, as i understand it (i am Jewish, but not from a family of notably observant people), the 613 mitzvoh are some of the detailed consequences (Peter called them "emanations") of the Ten Commandments or, copnversely, the Ten Commandments are the ten file-folders (Peter also called them "categories") into which all of the detailed Jewish laws can be filed.
