He was one of several Chthonian deities absorbed into the Cult of Dionysus. He was also referred to as Jupiter Sabazius and Bacchus Sabazius by the later Romans. His worshippers passed a gold snake through their robes across their lap as part of the rites of worship and healing. Sabazius derives either from "sabo" a god of health; or "sevas" reverential awe. The "Sabasia" also linked to him was a festival not unlike the Mithraic Mysteries in which the evolution of the races was performed as a mystery rite. Later revived in Rome it became the Sacra Savidia.
