In other words a demon which could appear as male or female depending on whom they were interacting with. They were probably posited as an explanation for sexual dreams and nocturnal emissions. Even if they are not real, as you believe, you are probably aware that even literary creations can be effectively evoked by a magician, -at the very least in the form of an egregore. (Some magicians can conjure up the shade of Gandalf or Galadriel, which then acts appropriately and has the appropriate characteristics and knowledge) For some people this (summoning a sucubi, etc.) would be a very dangerous undertaking and for others a pleasurable one, depending on what their concept of such a creature entails.
