You may have overshot the mark with your supposed ancient Egyptian origin
of "baphomet." It may also be only a coincidence, but notice the name's
similarity to (Ma)homet. If the Templars are to be included in the symbolic
tangle, they would have been exposed during the crusades to medieval
oriental civilization- including its rich mysticism; the "ba-" may refer to
their own baptism, thus "Bap-" (Baptist) + (Ma) "-homet" = Bap-homet.
The ritual meaning of this may have to do with mystical notions of
the soul's profundity.
