NINGYO: Japanese mermaid Goddess who cries white pearl tears. It was said if women could capture her and take a bite out of her, they would have eternal youth and beauty. OTO-HIME: (This story is similar to the story of Niamh)A young fisherman married Oto-Hime and went to live in her castle below the waves. They were very happy until he began to miss his family. Oto-Hime gave him a little box that he must carry (and never open) so that he could visit his family. When he reached his home, all of his family and friends had died hundreds of years before. The fisherman was so upset, that he sat down, and forgetting Oto-Hime's instructions, opened the box. Out came the hundreds of years he'd spent with the goddess. The fisherman withered and died. SAYO-HIME: This woman of Japan married a man who often traveled by sea. She would stand at the seashore for hours and watch for his return. She finally turned into the "Wife-Rock" of Futami. TOYOTA-MAHIME: "Lady Abundance of Jewels" married a mortal man, but warned him not to look upon her as she gave birth to their child. (Similar to the story of Melusine.) Her husband could not stay away, and peaked into her hut made of Cormorant feathers (as all birds are sacred to her) where he saw her in her true form, that of a serpent/water dragon. Toyota-Mahime was so upset, she retreated back to the ocean, with the child, and forever closed the doorway that joined her realm to the realm of mortals. I know a few people have been asking for Japanese sea deities, so I hope this helps. Toyota-Mahime and Ningyo have been favorites of mine for quite a while now. Good Luck! Lilly It is the very error of the moon: She comes more nearer earth than she was wont, and makes men mad. ----------------------------------------------------------- Got questions?
