Very good! That pretty much limits the time question, although not
absolutely. The Liber AL edition itself was done by W.T.Smith from the
HQ of Agape Lodge in So.Calif, before Crowley reputiated the CofT as a
legal vehicle for OTO in the States.
This brings us to a most probable first contact between Crowley and
Gardner on or after mid 1938 e.v., possibly not after c. 1944 e.v.,
since A.C. was pretty upset with Smith and CofT by then. All we have
from this is a possible, but not definite, earliest point of contact.
Still, it refines the range a bit. Crowley might have sent Gardner the
copy on or near the date of publication, having contact with Gardner
much earlier. A.C. may have provided the copy much later, having a copy
to hand when Gardner visited or wrote. The next step in research here
would be to find out the providence of this item -- how did it get
where you found it and where was Gardner living when he got it?

About 95% likelyhood of Gardner getting it in May of 1947 e.v., at least
the inscription. -- from the "P.I." part. Martin Starr noted to me that
the publication date is in error (printer/compositor's oversight) and that
this edition did not exist before 1942 e.v. It turns out to be no evidence
pro or con on Gardner knowing or corresponding with Crowley before that
date.
