|#|If you want to learn Thoth then get Aleister Crowley's Book
|#|of Thoth, the (blue) guidebook written specifically for his deck.
|#|It's not an especially easy book for many modern readers

|#|it and it is the only book that will tell you what Crowley was
|#|getting at.
|
|I tend to agree with this statement, though I think there are other tarot
|books of value, even incorporating Thoth elements in their review.

|#...Many have found that the best way to understand the Book of Thoth
|#is to read it once through, without studying, then reading through a
|#second time, this time paying close attention to the details you didn't
|#understand in the first reading. Frequently, points that are unclear
|#earlier in the book are made clear later on, and vice versa. The first
|#reading enables the reader to get a passing familiarity with the book,
|#so that s/he knows where to look to bring points together.
|
|Again I agree and would emphasize here the number of times this issue
|has been raised wrt Crowley. For years I've been letting people know
|that it seemed to me his texts composed a sort of holograph or web
|with which one must become familiar as a whole before one can truly
|understand the most complex elements. His intentional self-references
|and syncretistic style do not lend rapid apprehension by themselves,
|let alone the sometimes severely abstracted and tangenial manner in
|which he may set about illustrating a point.
|
|_The Book of Thoth_ is perhaps one of the more accessible and self-
|contained of his popular books that I have read. It is one to which
|I return over and over, having read it forward and back.
|
|Free love, right now!

|Mallory may have a complex work, but what he took was a *vast* body of
|both oral and written traditions and melded them into one, much simpler,
|body of legends. Who knows what the history of the period *actually* was.
|Factual history is a recent invention.
