Actually I think the etymology you're looking for is Greek.  
Baph-Metis.   Metis is Greek for wisdom, I'm not sure about Baph.   But I 
have also heard  the "baptism of wisdom"   theory.   I have also heard 
that it means "all colors"  ie.  Black, and the resolution of all antinomys.
The most credible etymology I;ve heard however is that it is a corruption 
of "Mahomet"  its self a corruption of "Mohammed".
