Alexander Duncan <aduncan@wwonline.com>:
#>If the A.'.A.'. exists today, however, it is completely secret

there are several groups known as "the A.'.A.'.", comparable to "the O.T.O."
and "the G.D.".

Josh Geller:
#>A.'.A.'. has always been completely secret. that which is known is
#>not A.'.A.'..

well put, Josh.

J A E (TOT_LA1@msn.com):
# If, by A.'.A.'., you only mean the "Third Order" (so-called) of
# "Invisible Masters" (so-called), then of course you are right. It
# should be clarified, however, that that name "A.'.A.'." applies to
# this hidden, silent "body" (so-called) neither any better nor any
# worse than many other names that have been applied, over the
# centuries, to what Karl von Eckhartshausen called called the
# "interior Church."

correct. it has been called the Great White Brotherhood, the Hidden
Masters, the Secret Chiefs, the Celestial Masters, the Body of Christ,
and any number of other names by a wide variety of people.

# On the other hand, if by A.'.A.'. you mean the specific training and
# advancement method established by Aleister Crowley and George Cecil
# Jones circa 1907 et seq., then your statement would not be correct at
# all. It is in no sense at all "completely secret."

that is a matter of interpretation. even the Caliphate OTO, which
maintains that it is a "secret fraternal religious org" or something
like this is known by the government of the country of residence in
order to qualify for its tax exemptions.

# It is unfortunate that Crowley's own usage left this ongoing ambiguity.

the ambiguity is important in the development of Hermetic organizations,
which tend to grow like trees, exuding an old bark to the wider society
while providing a context within which the 'Third Order' may be created.

# Technically, both usages are correct, but almost nobody
# stops to clarify what they mean.

true, and those who do not stop to clarify should be viewed with some
suspicion, for they are either ignorant or attempting to be ambiguous
for some reason (brevity, pretense to wisdom, intentional vaguery).

# Personally, I have always preferred to use the title A.'.A.'. solely
# to describe the specific identifiable system founded by Crowley and
# Jones.

there are other AAs which were neither founded by these individuals or
are completely secret. there are probably half a dozen organizations
which attempt to utilize Crowley's texts as hooks to get converts.

# When I want to refer to the "hidden, silent, completely
# secret" part -- Eckhartshausen's "interior Church" -- I prefer the
# more precise term S.'.S.'., while recognizing that there are dozens
# of equally viable names for the latter as well.

why S.'.S.'.? Silver Star? something else? in which of Eckhartshausen's
texts does he detail this interior Church? what is his background?
