"Aradia, the Gospel of the Witches" is a text supposedly translated by
Charles Leland that purports to be a kind of 'Book of Shadows' amongst
Italian Witches (strega). Its authenticity is skeptically regarded by
anthropologists (Leland did other work on Etruscans which is more
popular, but he is still considered a suspect source; the woman whom
he describes as providing this book may have constructed it herself).

Modern witches have taken Leland's and Margaret Murray's works
(an Egyptologist who wrote a book purporting to be about European
pagan survivals in the form of particular cultures) and used them
to construct a kind of mythological history from which they can
trace untained roots back to the dawn of time. it is quite cute.

you can get some good information on all of this in Margot Adler's
"Drawing Down the Moon". Adler is a reporter from NPR and has a
history with Neopagan culture.

blessed beast!
