You'll have to go back another three hundred years or so to get to Anglo-Saxon... Anyways, being a linguistics geek, I just so happen to have a 1953 edition of Sweet's Anglo-Saxon Primer. The glossary gives wita "councillor, advisor, sage", wis "wise", wicu "weak", and wic "dwelling, pl. camp". Which isn't terribly helpful (except for clearing up the word for 'wise'). However, the 1988 edition of Sweet's Anglo-Saxon Reader has the addition of wicca m. or wicce f. "wizard or witch". > But Gardner _May_ have taken >that word to try and give authenticity and antiquity to the _New_ religion >he _may_ have created.
