GYPSY MIRROR CHARMS
AGAINST THE EVIL EYE
The Kalbeliya Gypsies of India are the tribe from whom the Rom or Romany people are descended.
In Europe and America, the Rom are someteimes called "Bohemian" Gypsies,
but although large numbers of them did live in Bohemia in times past, as a people they have retained
the magic customs of their Kalbeliya Gypsy forebears. Among these customs is a belief in the
evil eye.
Kalbeliya Gypsy charms involve the magical "mirroring back" of the
evil eye through the literal use of
small mirror-disks. The apotropaic charms shown derive from magical ornaments originally
designed for use on horse harness, to protect the animals, but today we find them
utilized to decorate key rings, presumeably to protect the modern gasoline-powered
steed from the gaze of the envious.
These amzingingly intricate multi-coloured anti-evil-eye charms are made by Gypsy women who
crochet the mirrors into place and then incorporate them into braided and wrapped
arrays with tassles, buttons, seed beads, and brass balls. Because these amulets
are handmade by artisans, each
keyring charm is different in colour, but they come in two basic styles,
large and small, as shown.
Longer braided ropes, which can be worn
as belts, are also available. They terminate in similar traditional mirror charms and
may also include small white scallop shells as danglers.
