JOB'S TEARS
Job's Tears -- the seeds of the
grass Coix lachryma-jobi -- are widely employed in Africa, India, and
other places for the manufacture of jewelry, gourd rattle covers,
and also as a food.
In hoodoo practice,
we find them sold in candle shops and
conjure stores in packets of seven seeds for use in a particular spell or rite for
making wishes come true. To work this spell, you hold the seven seeds
in your hand, make your wish, and place the seeds in a pocket
of your clothes. Wear them in the pocket for seven days. At the end of the seven days,
go to where there is running water, hold the seeds in your hand, recite the
23rd Psalm ("The Lord is my shepherd, i shall not want") and
throw the seeds over
your left shoulder into the water to lay your trick.
In Mexican folk magic, it is also common to keep seven Job's Tears seeds
in your pocket for gambling luck,
but not to deploy them
in running water.
