MELLOS MAHAKALA HEALING ZODIAC CALENDAR TALISMAN AMULET
from Nepal
The Mellos Amulet is a Zodiac and Calendar talisman
in the form of a heavy cast brass disk, about 1" in diameter,
slightly concave on the ornamented side
and smoothly convex on the reverse. It is used for healing.
The ornamented side is covered with a dense array of
symbolic images consisting of the
Ba Gua (eight Chinese trigrams of the
seasons and directions) surrounded by tiny animals of the Chinese
Zodiac, embraced by the fierce figure of Maha Kala (or Mahakala)-- the cosmic figure of
Great Time visualized as a monstrous man.
The Mellos talisman is extensively worn by mothers in Nepal and
Tibet, who use it to soothe, heal, and cure the small injuries
and minor illnesses of their children. They wear the Mellos as a pendant,
and for ease of use it may be hung from a string or cord fixed to their
garments at the waist. It is employed
by rubbing the smooth convex side of the Mellos
on the little ones' "owies" while saying a short prayer.
In a sense,
although i doubt that Tibetan or Nepalese mothers would say so,
the use of the concentric rings of seasonal, calendrical, zodiacal,
and cosmic representations of time on the Mellos talisman
would seem to indicate
that the charm works by magically moving time forward to speed healing.
It thus resembles the way that Jewish mothers
hasten healing by pressing their hand over a hurt and saying,
"You won't feel it at all by the time you get married," and Mexican mothers
speed healing by rubbing a hurt and saying, "Sana, sana, colita de rana.
Si no sanas hoy, sanaras manana." ("Heal, heal, little tail of the frog.
If you don't heal today, you'll heal tomorrow.")
to evoke the absorption of a tadpole's tail
into its body as it matures into a frog and thus, by equating
the pain with the frog's tail, to encourage the rapid disappearance of the hurt.
