OCCULT BOOKS,
ROOTWORK COURSE,
and WRITING SUPPLIES

The Lucky Mojo Curio Company was founded in the belief that there is a strong need in the community for knowledge about traditional Southern-style hoodoo and conjure work. Although we carry amulets and charms from around the world, the occult books we sell are primarily those that are popular with African-American root doctors and hoodoo practitioners. While we can not guarantee that these occult books will teach you to how to draw money, luck, and love or help you cast off evil influences, we have confidence that you will truly appreciate the esoteric information they contain.

OCCULT BOOKS, SPELL BOOKS

Note: Due to the death of one of the old-time printers of the wonderful magical booklets we carry -- which have been in print since the early 20th century -- we are temporarily OUT OF STOCK of some titles. It is our belief that these occult books MUST remain in print, and we are working to reprint them as soon as possible, in facsimile editions that retain the charm and aesthetic values of the originals. Please bear with us on titles listed as OUT OF STOCK -- and look for their return to print very soon. (If you want to invest in publishing any of these books, please contact cat at 707-887-1521).

Albertus Magnus' Egyptian Secrets
attributed to Albertus Magnus
Orig. pub. circa 1820; this is a facsimile reprint of a 1930s English language ed.
A 19th century compilation (possibly by John George Hohman) of spells attributed to the famed Mediaeval German Catholic cleric Saint Albertus Magnus; like Hohman's Pow-Wows, it is equally popular among Pennsylvania Dutch and African-American conjurers. Contains instructions for making magic mirrors, banishing robbers, killing flies, and more!
191 pages, trade paperback.

Black and White Magic
attributed to Marie Laveau; actually by "Bivins, N.D.P."
Orig. pub. circa 1925 by the Crackerjack Drug Store, NOLA; this is a 1991 reprint.
The attribution to the famed 19th century New Orleans cult figure Marie Laveau is obviously spurious, but the real author was incredibly well-versed in New Orleans style hoodoo. Although hidden behind the cryptic role of an "editor," the author "Bivins N.D.P." was an outstanding root worker with a background in the Spiritualist Church movement, and the book is filled from cover to cover with traditional hoodoo magic spells for almost any condition.
64 pages, trade paperback. $7.00

The Black Pullet
anonymous; the French "translator" [& possible author] was "A.J.S.D.R.L.G.F."
Orig. pub. late 1700s; this is a 1972 English-language edition, reprinted in 2000.
A fabulous classic of talismanic and treasure-seeking spell-work, "The Black Pullet" has long been accepted by both Appalachian and African-American conjurers, and -- under the title "Gallina Negra" -- is also popular in Mexican brujeria and in Santeria.
80 pages, trade paperback. $13.00

Book of Magical Talismans (contains synopsis of The Black Pullet)
compiled by Elbee Wright
Orig. pub. circa 1700s; modern scrap book by Elbee Wright.
Those who practice invocatory magic will find much useful information in The Black Pullet, an anonymous classic of talismanic spell-work that has long been accepted by both Appalachian and African-American conjurers, and -- under the title Gallina Negra -- is also popular in Mexican brujeria and in Santeria. This modern edition, pasted up by Elbee Wright from the 1918 translation of Arthur Edward Waite, fills the need for copies of a very rare work, and also presents a random "cut-and-paste" or "scrap book" survey of the history of talismans.
40 pages, trade paperback. $6.00

(See our listing of Seals and Sigils of Solomon and Moses where many of these are available separately, printed on parchment paper.)

8th, 9th, and 10th Books of Moses
edited by Henri Gamache; attributed to Moses
Originally published in 1945; this is a facsimile reprint.
The renowned folk-magic scholar Henri Gamache collected this material from Mediaeval Coptic and Syrian grimoires that were attributed to Moses, the ancient leader of Israel. Then he wrote a lengthy preface in which he linked African tribal beliefs to ancient Jewish and Egyptian religions and sought to prove that Moses was "The Great Voodoo Man of he Bible," a remarkable thesis that foreshadowed the magical African Cultural Nationalism novels of Ishmael Reed (such as "Mumbo Jumbo") by several decades. See also the 6th and 7th Books of Moses.
106 pages, trade paperback. $6.00

Golden Secrets of Mystic Oils
by Anna Riva
Orig. pub. 1990; this is a revised edition reprint, 2000.
Over 550 of the most popular commercially-prepared condition oils are listed, with synonyms for those available from different manufacturers. This is not a formulary with recipes for making oils -- rather it names the oils and tells you how to use each one by including many short spells, chants, prayers, and combinations for fixing up mojo hands.
176 pages, trade paperback. $8.50

Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic
by Catherine Yronwode
Originally published in 2002.

Orig. pub. circa 1450; 1888 redaction by Mathers.
This is one of the most famous of the various "books of seals" or talismans used to invoke the powers of planets, angels, spirits, and demons. MacGregor Mathers was a founding member of the Order of the Golden Dawn and this book is widely used by European-style ceremonial magicians and hermeticists as well as by African-American conjurers.

The Magic Candle
by Charmaine Dey
Originally published in 1982; this is a facsimile reprint.
After Henri Gamache's "Master Book of Candle-Burning," this is our next-most requested title on candle magic. Dey provides a handy guide to the employment of novelty and image candles in practical work.

by John George Hohman
Originally published in Pennsylvania in 1820; this is a facsimile reprint of a mid-1890s edition.

Secrets of the Psalms
by Godfrey A. Selig
Originally published in Pennsylvania in the 1700s; this reprints a circa 1940 edition, 9th printing, 2000.
Here is an unusual and provocative item -- a Jewish kabbalistic work, translated from old Hebrew texts by a German-born mystical Christian author -- and marketed extensively to the African-American community through ads in black-owned newspapers such as the Chicago Defender. Each Psalm is prescribed for a different condition, from ending slander and drunkenness to drawing money and luck. Among Christian hoodoos, burning "condition" incense while reciting the Psalms is very popular. All 150 Psalms (King James Version) are included in the book for easy reference.
88 pages, saddle-stitched. $6.00

6th and 7th Books of Moses
attributed to Moses
Originally published in 1945; this is a facsimile reprint.
This is an anonymously edited 1940s compilation from The Weimar Bible, a Mediaeval grimoire attributed to Moses (author of the first 5 books of the Bible). The attribution is spurious, needless to say, but the material itself is fascinating. Included are the "seals" of various angelic, planetary, and infernal spirits, often used in European and African-American folk-magic. See also the 8th, 9th, and 10th Books of Moses.
182 pages, trade paperback. $5.00

7 Steps to Power
by Lewis de Claremont
Orig. pub. circa 1938; facsimile reprint of a mid-1940s ed.

Spiritual Cleansing
by Draja Mickaharic
Originally published in 1982; this is a 2004 reprint.
A fabulous collection of recipes for Eastern European and Afro-Caribbean Catholic herb baths, floor washing rites, and egg magic to rid the home of curses and protect family members from the evil eye.
96 pages, trade paperback. $12.95

Voodoo and Hoodoo
by Jim Haskins
Originally published in 1978, reprinted in 1999.
Ignore the title and the cover illustration; this book is about hoodoo, not voodoo, and it collects Southern conjure lore observed by the author during the 1960s-70s. If you are looking for an introduction to hoodoo from a modern urban black perspective, you will really enjoy this journalist's examination of his "roots." Because of a few serious botanical errors in the otherwise exemplary text, we enclose a one-page errata flyer with every copy at no charge.

Nickell's Botanical Ready Reference
by J. M. Nickell
Originally published circa 1885; this is a 1974 facsimile reprint.
Back in the 19th century, the Nickell and Murray company was one of the leading suppliers of bulk herbs to the medical and magical communities. J. M. Nickell prepared this exhaustive catalogue of the common names and Latin taxonomic names of such herbs for the use of pharmacists; it even contains an entire section of German language common names, as many 19th century pharmacists were German-American. Abbreviated codes for the medical uses of the plants are also included. This is the largest database of common and taxonomic names ever compiled, and is still of great use to herbalists and conjure doctors who work with botanical curios, herb magic, and herbal medicine.

Fortune Telling with Cards
by P. R. S. Foli
Orig. pub. as "The Key to Fortune Telling by Cards" in 1964; this is a revised edition reprint, 2000.
This is the best and most complete occult book currently in print on the subject of telling the past, present, and future with ordinary playing cards -- that is, so-called "Gypsy" fortune telling as used by rootworkers and conjure doctors. Dozens of systems and layouts are illustrated and explained, including an amazing 19th century rhyming technique in which each card is assigned a predictive couplet in poetry. Although the book bears a 1964 copyright date, internal evidence would indicate that it was originally written between 1900 and 1915 and that it first appeared in print in England.

New Edition Published 1965; long out of print; OUR SUPPLY IS SPORADIC
FACI is a 1-volume, collection of folkloric material gathered by Hyatt in the one county in Illinois, prior to 1935. It contains 10,00 separate magic spells and folkloric beliefs, given in the form of short statements, many of them identified by the ethnicity of the speaker. Includes spells and magical beliefs by speakers identified as German, Irish, Negro, etc. The section on hoodoo and conjure is large; discovering this material is what led Hyatt to travel to the South to collect the interviews for his next five volumes, Hoodoo - Conjuration - Witchcraft - Rootwork. This book is an important adjunct to the larger collection and places African-American conjure in perspective with European-American magical traditions of the same time period. The second edition is a complete reworking of the original material, with added information about Hyatt's life. The two editions are significantly different.

LUCKY DREAM BOOKS FOR LOTTERY PLAYERS

Dream books specifically designed for lottery play may provide interpetations of dreams (dream divination), but they also have something that other dream books do not have -- lucky numbers for you to bet on, depending on what your dreams reveal. These are some of the best and most often requested dream books utilized by folks who combine gambling play with signs and significations from hoodoo, conjuration, and rootwork.

Aunt Sally's Policy Players Dream Book
by Aunt Sally (pseudonym) aunt-sallys-policy-dream-book-cover
Orig. pub. circa 1890; this is a facsimile reprint of a 1920s ed.
A curiosity of hoodoo gambling magic, the text consists of four separate lists of objects and situations found in dreams with interpretations and lucky numbers for playing Policy, an illegal (and now obsolete) "numbers" game once popular in the black community. Old spiritual supply labels and blues songs often contain coded messages expressed in numbers from this book. Also included is a 19th century French divination system called the Oraculum or Book of Fate. There are interpretations and number picks for all dreams.
128 pages, trade paperback. $6.50

Billy Bing's Dream Book
by Billy Bing (pseudonym) billy-bing's-dream-book-cover
Orig. pub. circa 1951; this is a 22nd edition 1994 reprint.
This is the most stripped-down and condensed of all the old-time dream books. Not much to look at, it is set apart from the others because it also contains material on lottery or lotto rundowns and work-outs, methods of number selection that do not rely on the symbolic divination of dreams. The two betting systems -- dream interpretation on the one hand and lottery rundowns and work-outs on the other -- are almost never mixed, so this is a convenient bridge between hoodoo based dream lore and numerology-based "system betting."
48 pages, saddle-stitched booklet. $3.00

H. P. Dream Book
by Professor Uriah Konje (pseudonym of Herbery Gladstone Parris) h.-p.-dream-book-cover

Dream Book by "Prof. Uriah Konje," a pseudonym of the African American author and publisher Herbert Parris (hence the "H.P." of the title). Three-digit lucky numbers lists include Holidays, 66 pages of dreams (without interpretations), letters of the alphabet, 5 pages of ladies's names, 5 pages of gentlemens's names, natural events, days of the week, months of the year, body parts, garments, states, territories, and cities of the USA, and two mportant messages addresed "To the Black people of the World" and "To All Oppressed people of the World."
96 pages, saddle-stitched booklet. $5.00

Kansas City Kitty Dream Book
by Kansas City Kitty (pseudonym) kansas
Orig. pub. circa 1930s; this is a facsimile reprint.
What sets this dream book apart is the cute artwork on the covers and internal pages. Sections include a 1 page introduction, 12 pages of birthday horoscope numbers, 88 pages of dream keywords, 14 pages of women's names, and 12 pages of men's names. There are no interpretations for the dreams, just sets of number picks. The pen and inck drawings -- depicting scenes in an African American barbershop, lunch counter, small-town neighborhood, and church -- contain lucky nubers attached to almost every surface, so you can bet what you see, and as Rev. I. Doolittle says: "Brethren and Sisters, If ... you MUST play 'em, BOX 'EM."!
128 pages, saddle-stitched booklet. $5.00

Whether your interest is white magic spells or black magick spells; the magical and religious usages of charms, talismans, amulets, or gemstones; Southern root work, Celtic herbal magick, witchcraft spells, or candle magic; occult esoterica such as the conjuring of spirits or communing with the dead; drawing love, money, or gambling luck with amulets and spells; the practice of hoodoo, witchcraft, pagan magick, or folk magic; how to learn spell-casting and witchcraft; how to protect yourself from the evil eye and curses; or how to take off jinxes and crossed conditions; Lucky Mojo is the occult store and metaphysical shop for you.

We specialize in spiritual supplies that are hard to find, esoteric, arcane, and, above all, authentic. Our prices are fair and our quality unsurpassed because unlike most occult shops on the web, which are just resellers of factory-made products, we grow many of our own herbs, and we hand craft all of the dressing oils, incense, bath crystals, sachet powders, mojo bags, floor washes, and spell kits that we sell right here in our shop, one at a time.

In keeping with old-time conjure shop standards, we don't just make spiritual supplies; we pray over them and dedicate them to the needs of our clients as we craft them. We also offer free candle dressing with herbs and oils on all mail-order or in-shop glass encased vigil lights and novena candles, and there is no charge for the setting of prayer lights on our petition altars for customers of the shop.

We sell retail and wholesale from our occult store in Forestville, California, and we ship nationally and internationally to our many mail order customers. For your online shopping convenience we accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
