LATIN AMERICAN PACKAGE AMULETS

A package amulet -- called a "talisman" in Mexico -- is a square or rectagular assemblage of indigenous and colonial folk-magic charms packaged in cellophane or vinyl film. The contents may also include religious text and art. I prefer to call things by their given names, but unfortunately the word "talisman" is so generic that it is useless as a descrptive term, so i follow the lead of Ted Samsel of Austin, Texas, who calls these charms "package amulets."

Package amulets contain a variety of plant materials and symbolic objects. They may be carried on the person or placed on a private altar. As such, they are a cultural equivalent to African-American conjure bags or mojo hands. Latin American mulets with contents similar to package amulets but housed and displayed in different forms can be found on the pages devoted to the Mexican Snow-Globe Pyramid of Luck and Central and South American charm vials

Due to the number of images involved, each package amulet has been given its own web page:
