WOODEN PRAYER WHEELS

Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheels are a
unique cultural religious concept found only in Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan,
and other areas where Tibetan Buddhist practice is engaged.
They resemble an inscribed religious amulet (such a Jewish Mezuzah, a Muslim
Surah amulet, or a Mongolian protection package) in that they contain a piece
of scriptural writing, but unlike the inscribed religious talismans of
other cultures, they are activated by spinning them, which causes the prayer
inside to revolve.
Prayer wheels are made in many forms in Nepal, including elaborate precious metal-work with
incrustations of semi-precious stones, to be utilized in temples -- but
for sheer folkloric cheerfulness, simple
hand-carved wooden prayer wheels such as these, ornamented only
with brightly colourful paint, can;t be beat. They are desktop size
and look great in an office, where they can be spun by anyone who passes by
and wants to shower blessings on all who come near them. As with any
hand-made folk-crafted item, no two are alike, but the pair shown here are representative of
the range in styles.
