SAINT DYMPHNA
CATHOLIC PATRON SAINT OF ABUSED CHILDREN
Saint Dymphna's father was a pagan Irish chieftain named Damon and her
mother was a devout Christian woman whose name is no longer known.
Dymphna's mother died when the girl was in her teens, and her father,
who saw that Dymphna was as beautiful as her mother, made advances on
her. She fought him off and fled across the sea to Belgium,
accompanied only by an elderly priest and family friend named
Gerebernus.
Dymphna's father searched for them, and his search led to Belgium.
There a village innkeeper refused to accept his money, saying it was
difficult to exchange. The king deduced that his runaway daughter was
living nearby, for otherwise the inkeeper would be unlikely to know
about foreign currency.
Continuing to search the area, Damon soon found the pair hiding in the
town of Gheel. In a fury, he beheaded poor Gerebernus and then
demanded that Dymphna give herself to him. She again refused, and so
he summarily killed her.
In later years, an institution for the insane was erected near
Dymphna's grave, and as it became known for its miraculous healings of
the mentally ill, epileptic, and possessed, Dymphnawas deemed the
Patron Saint not only of the victims of child sexual abuse, incest, and
rape, but also of those suffering from nervous afflictions.
Her feast day is May 15.
