SAINT DYMPHNA

CATHOLIC PATRON SAINT OF ABUSED CHILDREN

saint-dymphna-candle-label

Saint Dymphna's father was a pagan Irish chieftain named Damon and her mother was a devout Christian woman whose name is no longer known. Dymphna's mother died when the girl was in her teens, and her father, who saw that Dymphna was as beautiful as her mother, made advances on her. She fought him off and fled across the sea to Belgium, accompanied only by an elderly priest and family friend named Gerebernus.

Dymphna's father searched for them, and his search led to Belgium. There a village innkeeper refused to accept his money, saying it was difficult to exchange. The king deduced that his runaway daughter was living nearby, for otherwise the inkeeper would be unlikely to know about foreign currency.

Continuing to search the area, Damon soon found the pair hiding in the town of Gheel. In a fury, he beheaded poor Gerebernus and then demanded that Dymphna give herself to him. She again refused, and so he summarily killed her.

In later years, an institution for the insane was erected near Dymphna's grave, and as it became known for its miraculous healings of the mentally ill, epileptic, and possessed, Dymphnawas deemed the Patron Saint not only of the victims of child sexual abuse, incest, and rape, but also of those suffering from nervous afflictions such as anorexia nervosa, depression, and anxiety.

Her feast day is May 15.

The label shown here is from a Lucky Mojo brand Saint Dymphna Novena Candle, burned by those who seek the intercession and miraculous aid of this Patron Saint.

The same herbs and fragrances used to dress this candle for customers and clients are the basis of Lucky Mojo Saint Dymphna dressing oil used for anointing oneself, fixing the home, preparing green or blue offertory candles or feeding a mojo bag. These herbs and scents also can be found in Saint Dymphna incense powder, sachet powder, and bath crystals.

Like the rest of the Lucky Mojo line, this product contains genuine herbal essential oils, not synthetic fragrances. Lucky Mojo labels are adapted from vintage packaging and in many cases the images are as traditional as the ingredients themselves.
