The occult symbolism of colours, especially as used in hoodoo folk magic and in esoteric metaphysical rites, was beautifully presented in Mikhail Strabo's influential 1943 book, "How to Conduct a Candle Light Service," specifically in the chapter titled "The Colour Candle Service in Spiritualist Churches," from which these brief extracts are drawn:
"THE RAINBOW or prism represents all colours and to this complete range of colours, we may add white at one end, and at the opposite end we may add black. And as we understand that the end is but the beginning, just as the beginning is always the end, we will find these two shades alongside one another, [and through the prism], the blending of solid black into the purest white."
