SAINT RAYMOND (SAN RAMON)
Saint Raymond was born at Portello, Catalonia and died at Cardona, August 31st, 1240. He was taken from his mother’s womb after her death, hence his name “Nonnatus” (not born). Because he was delivered by caesarean section he is the Patron of difficult childbirth, midwives, and pregnant women.
As a young man he joined the Mercedarian order at Barcelona, where he became a ransomer — a negotiator who went into Muslim-controlled territory during the Crusades to pay the ransoms for hostage Christians. In Algiers he liberated many captives, and when his money ran out, he offered himself as a hostage. For this reason, he is petitioned by those who are falsely accused and imprisoned, and is the patron saint of bail bondsmen and hostage negotiators.
While in captivity Raymond preached Christianity and converted a number of Muslims, which angered the local Islamic authorities, who subjected him to torture. He was made to run the gauntlet and was sentenced to death by impalement. The governor commuted his sentence to imprisonment in expectation that he too would be ransomed, but to prevent him from preaching, his captors pieced his lips with a red-hot iron and closed them with a padlock. Because of the padlock on his lips, he is said to shut the mouths of gossips, slanderers, and those who commit libel and defamation.
After his release from prison and arrival in Spain, in 1239, Raymond was made a cardinal by Pope Gregory IX. A year later he was summoned to Rome by the pope, but en route he died at Cardona, near Barcelona. In 1657 he was declared a martyr, and hence he bears the Palm leaves of martyrdom. His feast day is August 31st. `
To Stop Gossip
Tape a copper penny over the lips of the image of Saint Raymond on a fixed and dressed glass Saint Raymond Candle. Pray for Him to put an end to the gossip, slander, or false accusations to which you have been subjected. After the candle is finished, tie the penny in a white or red handkerchief and carry it on your person or conceal it in your home or place of business for protection.
To Ease a Difficult Childbirth
Sponge the body of the woman in labour with holy water into which you have dissolved a small amount of Saint Raymond Bath Crystals or a few drops of Saint Raymond Oil. Hang his picture over her bed or place it where she can see it and look to him as she prays for the baby to be born.
For Release from Incarceration
To ask for Raymond's assistance in raising bail money, having the bond amount lowered, getting a person out of jail on their own recognizance while awaiting trial, or getting probation or parole for a prisoner, dress a small skeleton Key with Saint Raymond oil and pray over it daily for seven days. After that, wear or carry the key on your person while engaging with lawyers, bail bonders, court officials, or the parole board. As you speak on behalf of the incarcerated person, touch or hold the key and silently call upon Saint Raymond for help. Dress the key with oil and pray every time you carry or wear it.
